7. Binned Rate Averages

This format will be used to obtain time averages of EPD rate data in physically significant coordinates. The coordinate orientations will be used:

  1. 1. Magnetic field--polar axis coincident with the magnetic field vector, x axis defined by the intersection of the plane normal to magnetic field and the Jovian equatorial plane in the sense opposite corotation. The y axis completes a right-handed coordinate system. These coordinates are shown in Figure 1.
  2. 2. Spacecraft-centered corotation coordinates--Polar axis along the corotation direction, x axis radially outward from Jupiter and the y axis completes the coordinate system. These coordinates are shown in Figure 2.

The count rate data will be binned into 14 nearly equal solid angle intervals in these two coordinate orientations. The bins are defined as follows:

I. Polar (0 <  theta <  31 deg.) (0 < phi < 360 deg.)

II. Midlatitude

a. (31 < theta < 73.4 deg.) (315 < phi < 45 deg.)
b. (31 < theta < 73.4 deg.) (45 < phi < 135 deg.)
c. (31 < theta < 73.4 deg.) (135 < phi < 225 deg.)
d. (31 < theta < 73.4 deg.) (225 < phi < 315 deg.)

III. Equatorial

a. (73.4 < theta < 106.6 deg.) (315 < phi < 45 deg.)
b. (73.4 < theta < 106.6 deg.) (45 < phi < 135 deg.)
c. (73.4 < theta < 106.6 deg.) (135 < phi < 225 deg.)
d. (73.4 < theta < 106.6 deg.) (225 < phi < 315 deg.)

IV. Midlatitude (South)

a. (106.6 < theta < 149. deg.) (315 < phi < 45 deg.)
b. (106.6 < theta < 149. deg.) (45 < phi < 135 deg.)
c. (106.6 < theta < 149. deg.) (135 < phi < 225 deg.)
d. (106.6 < theta < 149. deg.) (225 < phi < 315 deg.)

V. Antipolar (149 < theta < 180 deg.) (0 < phi < 360 deg.)

These binned data are stored in a clock defined as follows:
